Sometime when you install a program, it ended up showing funny characters. Especially if you install Xunlei or QQ or things like that. One way to solve this is to change your Window's  non-unicode setting to "Chinese".

But doing so will cause your other programs think that they should be installed in Chinese too. Messy!

Now try this program called Microsoft AppLocale (yea lo, they have this program but never tell you), it lets you select what language to run in for specific program. Neat :)

Note: if you are Vista / Windows 7, remember to run it as Administrator during installation

If you have been reading about Windows 7 you will find everyone is recommending you to go for the 64bit versions, where the most obvious benefit is allowing you to use up to 192GB of memory (32bit allows max 3.2GB), modern day computers should have at least 4GB -- costs below RM400.

I have gone 64 bits and so far have not found any compatible issue with whatsoever programs i am using. Running 64 bits doesnt mean you have to install everything 64 bits, it allows applications (such as MS Office) to run in 32bit modes. only drivers has to be 64 bits.

Today (22nd) marks the worldwide launch of Windows 7. Win7 is market as the OS that everyone should upgrade because Vista was a failure and XP is 9 year old and no longer fit. As much as i think it is all hyped, i hv managed to get a copy of Win7 Ultimate OEM and install it under Virtualbox just to testdrive and evaluate it. The installater was best! it only ask your name and password, and timezone, and did the rest by itself.

And here's my Win7 installed inside a Ubuntu host. Boot up is few times slower compare to the WinXP virtual machine. :P

Almost every house-hold have this wall mounted fan. Do you use the i(Fk)think brand?? I am using 2 and now both of them are broken, for the same reason... a broken neck. Someone just made a complain to me today, damn it the whole company is using IE6 and they say we didnt do their website "properly" because some of the elements are not showing up correctly. I mean come on guys, we are almost 2010 now. Please, if you want to browse the web, at least update your software sikit.

If you have pirated your Windows and afraid of WGA, you can get Firefox (Firefox3 is releasing next week), or Opera (9.5 just released today), or even Safari (now version 3.1.1) ! they are all FREE and they are modern browsers that are made to view MODERN WEBSITES.

Somemore right after the previous post, my hdd, konk. CCB. 100 years of work all gone in vain. i am blaming that on the dial up model i put in the other day. coz it was fine b4 that and after that day the HDD konk. 

back in reality, i just hacked into a cafe's PC to access my pendrive, cbb shopkeeper wont unlock the drive for me to use. i came to download my emails. here's a step by step guide, if you ever visited a cafe using similar system ;)

1. have your friend send you a batch file (.bat) via skype, msn, yahoo or whatever. inside just put "cmd". transfer over and open it.

2. plugged my thumdrive in, disk detected... but canot access, right? no problemo, in command line type start diskmgmt.msc to bring up the disk management. Tada! found the thumdrive. if there's no drive, simply assign a letter to it and we are done ;) with a little inspiration from this article at PCSTATS.com

3. now just type start E: (E: is the drive letter my USB mounted) to get an explorer window with your drive in it. go ahead, do a fdisk or format /s C: D: E: F: G: :)

my streamyx has been down since Thursday night and till now it is still down. I have to dig out an old modem card and use the pathetic lovely 1515 (connected at 28.8k) to help solve some customer issue -- otherwise we can't collect payment. GOOD THING THEY DIDNT SUSPEND MY DIALUP ACCOUNT! ;)

and i got some story to share when i called 1300-88-1515. this is when the person on the phone trying to guide you thru the routine troubleshooting steps:

me: "ok i have done all these, they are not working"... (actually i didn't)
hotline: "err..err.." (quiet for few seconds),
(overheard someone shouted): "cuba saja lah!"
hotline: "ok so you have done the basic troubleshooting, now lets try the advanced troubleshooting... bla bla bla (tns...)"
as soon as started telling me to create a dialer, i can't help but tell him impatiently -- "OK, i know what i am doing, can we skip all these? my settings are just FINE. (i am chimou, chimou? i would have probably write that customer-helpdesk-guideline book you are reading if TM is paying me. tiu!)"
and finally he gave up and told me: "pls wait while i transfer you to our technical person"...
me: "OK, TQ!"

(and i waited for about 3 mins) ...
he is back: "sorry sir, our technical person has not come to work yet" -- and that was 9:30am friday. i am bashedx9999.

finally we filed a report and gotten my report number. 5311686. (wow, 5 million reports! i think that number will be reset to 1 every month)

so I have made my report, waited a day, and of coz, i called again today! And this is what i get "your report's deadline is today, so u can't complain until tomorrow if you line is still down"... i am dumb-fucked. 

and oh btw, if you know a way i can ask stimx to pay my expenses on dial up, internet cafe, and deducting the stimx monthly charges for the 3 days down time, do let me know.

Apple unleashed their iPhone not long ago, creating another wave of design revolution in gadget industry after the iPod. Samsung, LG and many are releasing their "Apple inspired" phones soon, even before the real iPhone is going to sell. But strangely, everyone ahbeng ahseng and banggla I've spoken to are keen to see the iPhone in action, and nobody show any knowledge about those other copy-cat phones... another succesful marketing by Apple ;)

In the stock market apparently Apple has been performing very well in their stock too, while many tech company terhempas after the 2000 crisis and only slowly gaining back their market value by now, but Apple has already climbing their new peak, and even GOOG loose to them in the momentum!

If i would have bought some AAPL share back in 2003, i should be at least 4 times fatter now. DAMN!

2 more days to go and i quickly rush to LHDN to get my new PIN for eFilling :P. Come back and login with the new pin, I am surprised to see the vast improvement LHDN has made upon the eFilling system for this year's tax declaration. It has been very much simplified compare to last year's.

Few things i loved-
1. Everything has been simplified to only the necessary - very nice.
2. Before you click the final Hantar button, it will keep your inputs so that you can come back later to make corrections until you are happy with it.
3. just have to go thru page 2,3,4,5, done!
4. No more hanky panky PDF to download and submit.

Overall, Thumbs up! This is how things suppose to be. If you are still filling up the conventional way, make sure u try this next year.

Just arrived today, my 22" Wide LCD from DELL. 99% happy with it, 1% unsatisfy because of the color is lousy compare to my previous Samsung 19". Next time u wana get a Dell monitor, go Ultrasharp, or get Samsung.

Recently SK ALMA JAYA's computer has been invaded by tons of worms. They got so bad until everytime when Teresa brings back her thumbdrive from school, my 2nd computer (which is now hers) will get infected almost immediately. That leave me no choice but to install Antivirus (which i must say, am very reluctant to install because they take up disk spaces, and tend to slow down your computer).

I found out about Google Pack via google blog. Google Pack is a collection of free softwares which includes antivirus, antispyware, google earth, etc. Some of them come with a "lite" version and you are able to upgrade to the full version with a fee. I hope this one provide a minimum level of security. That's all i need for the time being.

Microsoft is nasty. They tempt us with IE7 but wont let you upgrade unless you have a copy of Windows that will pass the WGA test (Windows Genuine disAdvantage). Couple days ago a friend sent me this 9MB program that can help us poor souls get what we want (IE7!). Not really a secret anyway, i believe anyone who care to dig deeper should know its existant already.
